Thieves Caught in Stolen Gas Operation
Some small fuel distributors in the U.S. have been linked to a stolen gas operation in Mexico.
Press Release Service – Wired PR News – Police in Mexico caught several individuals this week who are believed to be tied to a stolen gas operation, which involves smuggling the product across the U.S. border. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the individuals had stolen over 17,000 gallons of fuel from a pipeline.
As noted by the AP, several small fuel distributors in the U.S. have reportedly purchased stolen petroleum products in what is deemed a multi-million dollar operation. John Auers, senior vice president of Dallas based petroleum consulting company Turner Mason & Co., is quoted in the report as stating, “We’re talking about very small volumes of material… In small volumes, that stuff can move through these (small processing plants). … I don’t think any of this stuff would have gotten into the finished petroleum product market without it somehow being laundered in between — sort of like laundering dirty money.”
