Scientists find new links to genes that may be beneficial in better understanding Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Press Release Service – Wired PR News – Scientists have reportedly found three genes in addition to APOE4 that are links to Alzheimer’s, which may contribute to better understanding of and treatment for the disease. As reported by Reuters, researchers have labeled the discovery the most significant in over a decade.
Julie Williams, a Neuropsychological Genetics professor at Cardiff University in Britain, is quoted in the report as stating of the research implications, “If we were able to remove the detrimental effects of these genes through treatments, we could reduce the proportion of people developing Alzheimer’s by 20 percent.”
As noted by Reuters, over 26 million people worldwide are affected by Alzheimer’s disease. The two studies pertaining to the recent findings are published in the Nature Genetics journal.
