Wilson’s Son Responds to Carter Racism Claims
The congressman’s son refutes insinuations that his father is a racist.
Press Release Service – Wired PR News – The son of U.S. Rep Joe Wilson has spoken out in defense of his father after former President Jimmy Carter suggested the congressman was motivated by racism in making his controversial outburst during a speech by President Barack Obama. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Alan Wilson recently refuted the claims.
Carter is quoted by the AP as stating at an Atlanta town hall on Tuesday of the congressman shouting “you lie” during Obama’s speech on health care reform last week, “I think it’s based on racism…There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president.”
Alan Wilson is quoted in the report to have later remarked, “There is not a racist bone in my dad’s body…He doesn’t even laugh at distasteful jokes. I won’t comment on former President Carter, because I don’t know President Carter. But I know my dad, and it’s just not in him.”
Dick Harpootlian, former Democratic Party Chairman in South Carolina, is further quoted by the AP as commenting on the debate, “You have a bunch of folks out there looking for some comfort in their racial issues. They have a problem with an African-American president…But was he motivated by that? I don’t think so. I respectfully disagree with President Carter, though it gives validity to racism.”
