House Approves Extension of Benefits for Unemployed

The House voted to extend unemployment benefits Tuesday.
Press Release Service – Wired PR News – The House voted in favor of a measure that would extend benefits for unemployed workers on Tuesday. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the House bill passed in a 331-83 vote, and if enacted would provide a 13-week extension for those whose benefits will soon run out in 27 states.
Rep. Jim McDermott is quoted by the AP as stating of the measure, “Across America there are people who are hanging on by a thin economic lifeline called unemployment insurance… Without passage of this bill, that thread will break for over 1 million workers before the end of this year, plunging them and their families into an economic abyss and threatening to reverse the positive signs we are beginning to see in the economy.”
