Lucy Vodden has passed away after a long illness.

Press Release Service – Wired PR News – The woman who served as the inspiration for the Beatles’ classic “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” as a child has died. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Lucy Vodden last week at the age of 46 after battling lupus.

As noted in the report Vodden was a childhood friend and schoolmate of late Beatles’ singer John Lennon, Julian, who drew a picture of her at four year’s old, which he brought home from school. Lennon was finding material for the “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album at the time, and was inspired by his son calling the picture “Lucy in the sky with diamonds.”

Julian, who had lost touch with Vodden after school, reportedly reunited with her over the last few years and made attempts to help her in coping with her illness. He is quoted by the AP as stating to the news source in June, “I wanted at least to get a note to her. Then I heard she had a great love of gardening, and I thought I’d help with something she’s passionate about, and I love gardening too. I wanted to do something to put a smile on her face.”
