The Romanian born author receives honor for works depicting life in Communist Romania.
Press Release Service – Wired PR News – Herta Mueller has been awarded a Nobel Prize in literature. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the controversial author of works that discuss the strict conditions of living in Communist Romania received the honor this week.
Mueller is quoted by the AP as remarking of the award in a statement, “I am very surprised and still cannot believe it… I can’t say anything more at the moment.”
Michael Krueger, head of Hanser Verlag, Mueller’s publisher in Germany, is further quoted as stating of the honor, “By giving the award to Herta Mueller, who grew up in a German-speaking minority in Romania, (the committee) has recognized an author who refuses to let the inhumane side of life under communism be forgotten.”
