A real estate agent has been convicted of forcing her nanny to become an indentured servant for almost two years.
San Francisco, California (WiredPRNews.com) – A real estate agent has been convicted of holding her nanny virtual prisoner for almost two years. As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, Mabelle de la Rosa Dann, is set to be sentenced in January for the enslavement of Zoraida Pena-Canal, whom she helped bring to the U.S. from Peru to help care for her children and maintain upkeep of her home.
As noted in the report, a customs official in an affidavit stated Dann never provided Pena-Canal with any payment, forced her to work seven days a week, and would not allow her to hear or view Spanish-speaking media, in addition to other allegations.
John Morton, with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, is quoted by the Chronicle as stating of the case, “No person should ever be forced to live in a world of fear, isolation and servitude… This case shows the level of calculation and cruelty exhibited by those who treat human beings as nothing more than a commodity.
