Thousands of people wed in a mass ceremony in South Korea officiated by the controversial leader of the Unification Church.

This week 45,000 people were married worldwide in a special ceremony.

Asan, South Korea (WiredPRNews.com) – Thousands of people were married in one wedding ceremony Wednesday, in Asan South Korea, as reported by the Associated Press (AP). Rev. Sun Myung Moon, founder of the Unification Church who presided over the mass wedding is quoted in the report as stating of his belief that such pairings help bring peace to the world, “My wish is to completely tear down barriers and to create a world in which everyone becomes one.”

As noted by the AP, controversial figure Moon, who claims to be the Messiah, founded the church in 1954 and held his first mass wedding in the early 1960s. Over the next few decades, the numbers of those participating in the mass weddings significantly expanded. Some critics of the church accuse Moon of brainwashing its members and engaging in cult-like activities. Members frequently allow Moon to choose their mate for them believing he has divine insight, with some not meeting their intended spouse until the wedding ceremony.

As further noted in the report, the brides and grooms who participated in Wednesday’s ceremony were from various countries around the world including South Korea, the United States, Japan, and Europe.
