Wal-Mart is lowering prices for online book sales which provides more competition for leading online retailers like Amazon.com.

Wal-Mart and Amazon.com Inc. are battling it out in a price war over the online sales of their books.

U.S. (WiredPRNews.com) – A discount battle between a retail giant and a leading online book seller has turned into an all out price war. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. recently lowered their prices on the online sales of upcoming book releases in an aggressive campaign to top one another in the marketplace. Many speculate that Wal-Mart may be positioning itself to have the same influence in the online market as it does as a retailer. Both companies reportedly lowered their prices for anticipated releases to $9 since Thursday.

Albert Greco, a marketing professor at Fordham University in New York City, is quoted by the AP as stating, “While it’s the largest retailer in the United States, it’s not the dominant online retailer in the United States… And this appears to be an attempt to increase its position in the online space.”
