Heart defect passed on by sperm donor
A sperm donor with a serious genetic condition passed it on to several of the children he fathered.
Chicago, Illinois (WiredPRNews.com) – A sperm donor with a serious genetic heart condition passed it on to several children he fathered. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the donor passed along a defect that put 9 of the 24 children he fathered at risk for sudden cardiac death.
As noted in the report, one of the children died of heart failure as an infant. Information about the case has been published in a medical report in Wednesday’s release of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The authors of the medical report make a recommendation for sperm banks to conduct testing for genetic heart problems in donors. Many reportedly do, but often for infectious diseases and other less common genetic conditions.
