The time to claim an unclaimed Texas lotto prize of $7 million expired early this week.
Dallas, Texas (WiredPRNews.com) – The winner of a Texas lottery prize of over $7 million lost his or her chance to claim the money early this week. As reported by the Dallas Morning News, time to claim the winning ticket purchased by someone in May expired after Monday.
Bobby Heath, a spokesman for the Texas Lottery Commission, is quoted in the report as stating, “The ticket expired 180 days from the day of the drawing — May 6 — and when a prize goes unclaimed, the money goes back to the state.”
Heath is further quoted as stating of the millions in unclaimed prize money in Texas over time, “In fiscal year 2009 [which ended on Aug. 31], we gave approximately $43 million back to the state in unclaimed prizes…It has been as high as $61 million in 2005, with $54 million in 2006, $59 million in 2007 and $54 in 2008.”
