Iraq parliament passes electoral law
The government passed a law Sunday that will help resolve a widely debated voting issue.
Baghdad (WiredPRNews.com) – The Iraq Parliament recently passed an electoral law that will reportedly resolve a voting issue that could have stagnated an upcoming national election. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the decision to pass the law after debating on it for weeks will also impact the timing of American troop withdrawal from the country.
U.S. President Barack Obama is quoted by the AP as stating of the legislation, “This is an important milestone as the Iraqi people continue to take responsibility for their future. I want to congratulate Iraq’s leaders for reaching this agreement… The United States will continue to stand with Iraq as a strong partner and as a friend.”
Iraq’s prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, is further quoted in the report as describing the law in a statement on his website as a “historic victory of the will of the people.”
