Japan star convicted on drug charges
Noriko Sakai has been convicted of drug use.
Tokyo, Japan (WiredPRNews.com) – Noriko Sakai, a Japanese singer and actress, has been convicted on drug charges. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the 38 year-old once widely popular star received an 18-month, three year suspended sentence for drug use and possession on Monday.
As noted by the AP, thousands of people awaited the verdict outside of the courthouse prior to the announcement. Sakai and her husband were both arrested in August, she after turning herself in to authorities after disappearing for a week. A verdict in the case against her husband, Yuichi Takaso, is expected to be handed down this month.
As further noted in the report, the scandal has negatively affected Sakai’s public image and has led to the loss of commercial deals and a contract with her record label.
