Mom refuses deployment to Afghanistan

A military mother has refused to deploy to Afghanistan in order to take care of her baby.
Savannah, Georgia (WiredPRNews.com) – A mother has refused deployment to Iraq because she had no one else to care for her young child during her time overseas. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Spc. Alexis Hutchinson, 21, could be charged criminally for her refusal to deploy to Afghanistan; however, she stated the only alternative given to her was to place her 10-month old son in foster care.
Hutchinson’s civil attorney, Rai Sue Sussman, is quoted by the AP as stating of her decision, “For her it was like, ‘I couldn’t abandon my child…she was really afraid of what would happen, that if she showed up they would send her to Afghanistan anyway and put her son with child protective services.”
As noted by the AP, charges have not been filed against Hutchinson. Officials are investigating the matter.
