White House and bishops in abortion dispute
The White House is reportedly in a dispute with Catholic bishops over abortion in health care reform.
Washington, D.C. (WiredPRNews.com) – The White House is reportedly seeking to find a middle ground with Catholic bishops who want strong anti-abortion provisions included in health care reform legislation. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has criticized the bill proposed by Sen. Harry Reid for its compromise on allowing abortions to be covered in government run health care plans as long as the procedure is paid for by the premiums of the beneficiaries. Some fear this would change current restrictions on abortion funding by the government.
As noted by the AP, an initial vote is set to take place Saturday on the issue, with a full debate expected to begin after Thanksgiving.
