New text messaging programs allow individuals to help police with anonymous tips.

Boston (WiredPRNews.com) – New texting programs are being implemented across the nation to help police in solving crimes. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), text-a-tip programs are gaining popularity among law enforcement agencies for obtaining credible leads for murders and other serious crimes.

As noted by the AP, the programs allow tipsters to text information to authorities that can be used to solve crimes. The program in Boston, which was reportedly the fist city in which crime tip texting was widely promoted, has purportedly garnered approximately 1,000 tips over the course of two years for police.

Officer Michael Charbonnier is quoted by the AP as stating of the program with regards to it providing options for those who have long lived in fear of coming forward with information about crimes, “It’s either call 911 or live with the bad guy. And if you call, there could be repercussions… So when they have this option of texting us — knowing no one will know who they are — well, now, people give us license plate numbers, they give us names.”
