A New York couple has been charged with forcing a young woman into prostitution.
New York (WiredPRNews.com) – A New York couple has been charged with sex trafficking after allegedly forcing a young woman into prostitution. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Domingo Salazar and his wife Norma Mendez are accused of smuggling the woman into the country from Mexico, and forcing her to work as a prostitute. The woman was reportedly found bruised and beaten after being held captive in their home for over a year.
As noted by the AP, an infant’s remains were also found at the home. The child was reportedly the son of the young woman, and died last year after Salazar refused to allow him to receive medical care.
The couple was being held without bail after their appearance in the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn. U.S. Attorney Benton Campbell is quoted in the report as stating, “The trafficking of human beings and sex slavery are unconscionable in this day and age and will not be tolerated.”
