Oral Roberts passed away Tuesday in California.
Tulsa, Oklahoma (WiredPRNews.com) – Pioneering TV evangelist Oral Roberts has died. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Roberts passed away Tuesday in California after being hospitalized on Saturday. He reportedly died of pneumonia related complications.
Duke University divinity school professor Grant Wacker is quoted by the AP as stating of Robert’s impact on mainstream religious television, “In conservative Protestant culture, he’s second only to Billy Graham… Jerry Falwell is important, too, but I think in the long run we’ll see that Oral Roberts had more impact.”
Biographer David Edwin Harrell is further quoted in the report as stating of Roberts, “Oral was a pioneer in opening this whole message up to the mainstream churches and leading a generation of Pentecostals into easier connection with the evangelical world… They had been completely estranged prior to that.”
Roberts, who founded Oral Roberts University in 1963, was 91 at the time of his death.
