Mexico City lawmakers legalize same-sex marriage
The city becomes the first in Latin America to pass legislation to legalize gay marriage.
Mexico City (WiredPRNews.com) – Mexico City has passed a bill to legalize gay marriage. As reported by CBS 11 News, the city became the first in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage on Monday with the passage of legislation that will also grant homosexual couples adoption, wealth inheritance, insurance policy inclusion, and other rights warranted under the law to heterosexual couples.
Many anticipate that Leftist Mayor Marcelo Ebrard of the Democratic Revolution Party will sign the recently passed measure into law. Lawmaker and member of the leftist party Victor Romo is quoted in the report as stating of the passage of the historical measure, “For centuries unjust laws banned marriage between blacks and whites or Indians and Europeans…Today all barriers have disappeared.”
