Fort Myers (Mesothelioma Cancer News) – A Lee County construction project to build an overpass at Summerlin Road and College Parkway has been placed on hold for an indefinite period of time. As reported by NBC-2 News, the project was halted due to the finding of asbestos, and an investigation is now under way regarding the extent of possible contamination.
Rhonda Haag of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection is quoted in the report as stating of the matter, “The investigation has expanded.” Haag is further quoted as stating of the possible steps that may be taken pending test results of soil samples taken from the area, “The entire overpass, where you see the walls here, the entire amount of material might have to be removed which means these side walls would have to be taken down temporarily.”
As noted in the report, the project was originally set to be completed by next summer.
