Hawthorne, CA, January 4, 2010 - Christopher Rudolph, a Language Arts teacher, has been sharing his didactic songs, poems, raps, and chants that teach about English grammar, history, math, and test taking strategies. His latest song “TRAP N RAP IT” is a rap song based on his new Reading Comprehension Test Taking Strategy which is also called “TRAP N RAP IT.” He has been using this song and mnemonic device to effectively improve students’ reading comprehension and test scores. “TRAP N RAP IT” is an acronym in which each letter reminds students to do something while taking a reading comprehension test. “T” reminds students to underline the title. “R” reminds them to read the questions first. “A” reminds them to answer any questions that can be answered before doing the reading. “P” reminds them to predict what the reading is about. “N” reminds them to number the paragraphs. “R” reminds them to read the passage and underline important terms. “A” reminds them to stop as they are reading and go answer any questions that they can as they read along. “P” reminds them to remember the number of the paragraph to return to so they can continue reading. “I” reminds them that it is time to eliminate and choose answers. “T” reminds them to verify the truth of their answer choice by writing the paragraph number from where they found the answer next to the question. “With so much riding on student’s test scores on exams like the California Standards Test (CST), we need every advantage we can get,” he said. So far, the results have been extremely promising. His students are remembering the strategy and using it to improve their test scores. His students have made tremendous improvement on benchmark tests that try to prepare them for the CST. The students that he is teaching are struggling readers that have a particularly difficult time with reading comprehension. They are all enrolled in an intensive reading intervention program. “Most of my students are reading three to four years below grade level. To see them improving so much is really amazing. There is no stopping them now,” he said.
