Texas standards omit liberal, minority groups from curriculum requirements

The Texas State Board of Education has tentatively adopted standards that fail to include significant liberal and minority groups for inclusion in specified curriculum studies.
Dallas, Texas (WiredPRNews.com) – The Texas State Board of Education recently debated on new curriculum standards that require high school students to learn about conservative groups of a certain time period, but leaves out many which are liberal or minority-rights focused that are deemed to be of significance. As reported by the Dallas Morning News, the requirements were among a list of recommended changes for social studies standards to be debated on by the board.
In addition to learning about conservative groups, an amendment was also voted on to require that Joseph McCarthy and his assertions about the U.S. government in the 1950s be portrayed in a more positive light. The standards adopted by the board will reportedly be effective for the next decade, and used for testing and textbooks.
As noted in the report, the board, which is majority Republican, discussed various social studies standards for schools in the state Thursday and Friday, subsequently making the decision to postpone further debate on the issues until March.
