U.K. (Mesothelioma Cancer News) – A new bill is reportedly being considered by Britain’s House of Lords that will allow sufferers of pleural plaques to receive legal compensation in England and Wales. As reported by Bloomberg, the bill would reverse the withdrawal of the right in 2007.
As noted in the report, several insurers are challenging a comparable law in Scotland due to a significant increase in costs if it is passed. David Masters, a London-based credit analyst at Moody’s, is quoted in the report as stating of the issue, “There could be a material deterioration in prior year profitability… There remains a risk that pleural plaques claims costs could spiral over time.”
Dr. Jeremy Steele, Chairman of the National Mesothelioma Resource Centre, is further quoted in the report as stating, “A lot of people think asbestos-related illness is ancient history, but it’s very much a real problem in this country and will be for the next 10 years at least.”
