Dallas, Texas (WiredPRNews.com) – A Dallas mother who was forced to leave her birth country of Kenya has been reunited with the children she left behind. As reported by CBS 11 News, Lucy Mashua’s two children arrived in Dallas last week after four years of being apart from their mother.

As noted in the report, Mashua petitioned for years to have her children brought to the United States after she was forced to leave due to her activism in seeking to stop genital mutilation, which she was subjected to as a child. Mashua is quoted by CBS 11 as stating of the experience, “It was a pain I can never explain and I always go back to that.”

Mashua is further quoted in the report as stating of having her children with her in Dallas, “I think they’ll be safer than they’ve ever been in their lives. And, they’ll have their mother, which is the greatest gift of all, that we were given by the government of the United States… Here, there’s freedom. And you can express yourself.”
