Gender travel illness differences
A new study suggests men and women are prone to suffering different illness types when traveling.
New York (WiredPRNews.com) – The types of illnesses typically suffered by male travelers differs from those more commonly suffered by female travelers, according to a new study. As reported by Reuters, the study suggests that men are more subject to contract sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and fevers, while women more typically deal with conditions such as diarrhea, colds, and urinary tract infections.
As noted in the report, the University of Zurich study involved research on 59,000 international travelers.
The researchers are quoted by Reuters as stating of the findings on the increased likelihood of men contracting STDs, “Safe sex advice is a missing component in most pretravel practices and our study suggests that male travelers, in particular, would benefit from greater preventive efforts.”
More information about the study may be found in the Clinical Infectious Diseases journal.
