A different kind of chatroom hits the web
Chatroulette puts a unique twist on traditional online chat.
New York (WiredPRNews.com) – A new website has put a unique spin on chatting online. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Chatroulette allows strangers to chat with randomly selected strangers and view them via webcam.
Hal Niedzviecki, who wrote “The Peep Diaries: How We’re Learning to Love Watching Ourselves and Our Neighbors,” is quoted by the AP as stating of the site, “Chatroulette is stark because it feels like television. It’s like sitting in front of the TV flipping channels, except the people are real.”
As noted in the report, some suggest the site may be used for purposes other than typical friendly chat. Some have used the medium to post explicit, violent, and other potentially disturbing content.
As further noted by the AP, Chatroulette reportedly saw approximately one million unique visitors around the world in January.
