“Bait car” accident lawsuit settled

The Dallas City Council has agreed to a lawsuit settlement pertaining to a “bait car” crash that killed an elderly woman.
Dallas, Texas (WiredPRNews.com) – The family of an elderly woman who was killed in a collision involving a stolen police “bait car” has been awarded a settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit against the Dallas Police Department. As reported by CBS 11 News, the Dallas City Council agreed to a settlement in the amount of $245,000 for the case stemming from the 2008 death of 83 year-old Annie Reyes.
As noted in the report, suspect Eddie Ramirez allegedly crashed into Reyes with a stolen “bait car.” Police reportedly use these types of vehicles, which are equipped with tracking devices, to entice potential thieves. The DPD reportedly made modifications to their bait car program following a temporary suspension of it after the fatal crash.
Michael Reyes, grandson of Annie Reyes, is quoted by CBS 11 as stating of the changes to the program, “It’s bad that my grandma had to be killed to show a better system needs to take place. I hope it saves lives and that it won’t happen again to anybody else’s grandmother, great grandmother, or anybody.”
