Ontario (Mesothelioma Cancer News) – Two Canada MPs clashed in a meeting Thursday over asbestos concerns. As reported by the Toronto Sun, Pat Martin with the NDP and Natural Resources Minister Christian Paradis got into a heated debate during a natural resources committee meeting over the asbestos industry.
As noted in the report, an estimated 90,000 individuals die annually due to asbestos-related diseases, according to data from the World Health Organization. Canada reportedly mined approximately 150,000 tons of the mineral in 2008, exporting a significant majority of it.
Martin is quoted in the report as stating of the issue, “We are exporting human misery to other countries on a monumental scale, and the rest of the world is begging Canada to stop it.”
Paradis reportedly responded to the assertions with claims that current asbestos uses were safe in comparison to past uses, while noting the potential dangers of chrysotile asbestos as well.
