Insults directed at suicide victim online

Several derogatory comments have been posted about a teen online after her suicide.
New York (WiredPRNews.com) – Several members of a New York community are outraged after a tribute site for a teenager is targeted with derogatory comments. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the site created for popular high school student Alexis Pilkington was recently hit with multiple insulting messages as the town of West Islip mourns Pilkington’s suicide.
Lorraine Kolar is quoted by the AP as stating of the online postings, “I think it’s horrible. It’s vicious. It’s cruel. It upsets me as a parent.”
Anne Collier, co-director of Internet and social web site safety forum Connectsafely.org is further quoted in the report as stating of the insensitive practice, “Trolling is part of the dark side of cyberspace… It’s not necessarily tied to any school activity… It’s quite anonymous and random and is usually seen as aggressive, egregious cruelty on the Internet. The people who sit behind computers and do this are known as trolls.”
