Arnold, MD (WiredPRNews.com) – Tanjent Communications has released their top five picks for MBA alternatives, leading up to the 2010/2011 school year. Programs selected include specialized academic and training programs which require less time and money than the traditional MBA, yet still boost desirability in the job market.
The list includes online graduate programs from Clemson University, as well as Indiana University, “Mini-MBA” programs from the University of Buffalo and Columbia University, and an online executive MBA program from the University of Wyoming.
“A lot of people are thinking about business school for the fall right now,” commented Thomas Heim, owner of Tanjent Communications, publisher of MBABuzzKill.com and MiniMBAGuide.com. “We’ve done a lot of research on alternatives, and we wanted to share them with prospective students before they made any major commitments.”
Clemson University offers a Master of Human Resource Development online. Human resource development is an in-demand career field right now, and will be well into the future, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. The degree takes two years to complete and costs approximately $20,000 in total tuition.
If someone wants the reputation of a power-house business school on their resume, yet doesn’t want the commitment of an MBA, Indiana University offers a 30-credit Master of Science in Strategic Management online. The degree can take as little as18 months to complete. Tuition is around $30,000 for the entire degree.
For those looking for a general business education with only a few months to dedicate, a couple of “mini-MBA” programs stand out as alternatives to the full MBA. The University of Buffalo offers an online mini-MBA for under $1,000. Columbia University offers the “Columbia Essentials of Management: Highlights of an MBA” onsite in New York City. Columbia’s two-week program can be a little pricey, however, costing nearly $20,000.
Finally, for more experienced professionals still looking for an MBA degree, the University of Wyoming offers an online executive MBA. Tuition for the entire program is less than $20,000 and the course of study can be completed in two years. Also, the program is accredited by the AACSB, the gold standard in business accreditation.
