A growing number of employees are choosing to participate in offers by their employers to lose weight for money. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), an estimated one third of employers in the country have or are planning to introduce these types of offers and/or wellness programs to entice employees to take steps to get healthier.
Dr. Kevin Volpp, director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Health Incentives, is quoted by the AP as stating of the response, “There’s been an explosion of interest in this.”
As noted in the report, health officials have stated that over two-thirds of people in the country are overweight, which can purportedly lead to a number of health complications including heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
