As reported by the Associated Press (AP), some research suggests that patients in the U.S. may spend up to $86 million on different forms of back care; however, little evidence supports these methods are working.
Dr. Richard Deyo of Oregon Health and Science University in Portland is quoted by the AP as stating of there being no one solutions that is beneficial for all who suffer with back ailments, “There are a lot of procedures going on for patients in whom we don’t have good scientific evidence that it’s going to help.”
As noted in the report, some experts suggests a number of back problems can heal with time, and due to the wide range of possible causes of back pain the options solutions for chronic issues can vary. A thorough discussion of options with a physician or specialist, and possibly a second opinion may be considered.
