Utah – An official in Utah’s decision to tweet after giving an execution order has sparked controversy. As reported by Yahoo! News, Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff posted comments on Twitter about the firing squad execution of Ronnie Lee Gardner set for Friday morning.
Shurtleff is quoted in the report as stating on his Twitter feed, “I just gave the go ahead to Corrections Director to proceed with Gardner’s execution. May God grant him the mercy he denied his victims.”
As noted in the report, several Twitter users subsequently commented about Shurtleff’s post, with one quoted by Yahoo! News as stating that it, “will probably go down in history as the dumbest most disgusting use of Twitter ever.”
Shurtleff is further quoted as stating in defense of his use of the site, “I believe in an informed public. As elected official I use social media to communicate directly with people.”
