San Francisco –Immigrant farm workers are issuing a challenge for Americans to take their jobs. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the United Farm Workers of America has begun a “Take Our Jobs” campaign to give unemployed workers the opportunity to experience the work of farmers, in response to purported assertions made by politicians and activists that work has been taken from Americans and hurt the economy, as well as the call for immigration reform. Comedian Stephen Colbert is set to feature the campaign on his Comedy Central show, the “Colbert Report” on July 8.
Arturo Rodriguez, president of the United Farm Workers of America, is quoted by the AP as stating of the matter, “The reality is farmworkers who are here today aren’t taking any American jobs away. They work in often unbearable situations… I don’t think there will be many takers, but the offer is being made. Let’s see what happens.”
Those who wish to participate, and apply for available agricultural jobs may visit http://www.takeourjobs.org for more information.
