US – More and more divorce attorneys are turning to social media to find information valuable to their cases. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the information sharing habits of users of sites like Facebook and Twitter have provided divorce lawyers with an avenue for obtaining useful evidence for cases.
As noted in the report, the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers has stated more than 80 percent of members have utilized or come into contact with evidence found on social networking sites in the last five years.
Colorado divorce attorney Leslie Matthews is quoted by the AP as stating of the matter, “You’re finding information that you just never get in the normal discovery process — ever… People are just blabbing things all over Facebook. People don’t yet quite connect what they’re saying in their divorce cases is completely different from what they’re saying on Facebook. It doesn’t even occur to them that they’d be found out.”
