Punta Gorda, FL (News)—A single-vehicle crash in Charlotte County killed an elderly woman and left four others in critical condition, when the van they were riding in lost control and overturned. The Florida Highway Patrol stated the fatal crash occurred on Friday, June 25, 2010 around 9:35 p.m., on Interstate 75 in Punta Gorda, as reported by the News-Press.

FHP troopers reported a 2001 Nissan van was transporting seven people on I-75, when the driver lost control as the van’s right rear tire tread separated. This caused the van to slam into a guardrail and overturn, which ejected one person from the vehicle.

The passenger who was ejected, Elumene Theordoris, 73, of Fort Myers was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency medical crews. Theordoris was reportedly the only one who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Other passengers identified as Sainvillia Tondo, 52; Altgrasse Jean, 72; Jerry Tondo, 16; and Maria Clerge, 59, all of Lehigh Acres were seriously injured. The injured passengers were transported to Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda and Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers for treatment of their injuries.

The driver of the van, Jesnel Gilbert, 33, was charged with careless driving. It is unknown if Gilbert was injured in the crash as well.

The FHP is conducting a full investigation into the fatal and injurious automobile accident.
