Washington – President Barack Obama recently signed a jobs bill that many say will prevent 300,000 layoffs of teachers and others. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the $26 billion emergency jobs bill was passed through the House on Tuesday and signed immediately by the president.
As noted in the report, Democrats touted a strong need for the bill’s passage before schools were back in session, while Republicans labeled it as wasteful spending. Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash is quoted as stating of Republican claims that the legislation will add to the federal deficit, “They want to do everything in their power to make certain that President Obama can’t get this country going again. I think in November they are going to find it was a dumb policy.”
Obama is quoted by the AP as stating of the legislation during a ceremony Tuesday at the Rose Garden, “We can’t stand by and do nothing while pink slips are given to the men and women who educate our children or keep our communities safe.”
