US – A number of individuals suffering from disease are finding different forms of support with the use of social media. As reported by ABC World News, social networking sites like Facebook have become viewed by many as platforms for reaching out to others in their condition as well as raising awareness and support for causes for those suffering with disease.
Carlos Sanchez, who was previously on dialysis and in need of a kidney transplant, is quoted in the report as stating of connecting with others online, “I said the only way I can talk to my, all my friends, is through Facebook.”
The mayor of the town where Sanchez resides and his Facebook friend, Mayor April Capone Almon, is further quoted as stating of responding to a request for potential donors for Sanchez, “I knew him well enough to know he was a nice person and a good person… I just felt like he needed and I could help him.”
As noted in the report, many have created Facebook pages for providing financial and other support for disease related causes.
