New York, NY (New York City Injury Lawyer News)—While it remains no secret that a pedestrian’s commute through the City That Never Sleeps has its risks, a new study found vital information, which is expected to be applied to creating safer New York City roadways. The NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) released the landmark report Monday, August 16, 2010, along with a plan of action intended to increase safety for the city’s walkers. The study looked at more than 700 pedestrian crashes, disproving several assumptions concerning the true level of safety upheld in the populous city along the way.
One popular belief concerning transportation in the busy city could be that yellow taxis are to blame for countless pedestrian-involved traffic accidents. However, the report found that 79 percent of crashes, resulting in a pedestrian’s death or serious injury, involved private automobiles. Male drivers were also reportedly behind the wheel during 80 percent of wrecks, resulting in a walker’s death or serious injury. Between 2005 and 2009, pedestrians accounted for more than half, or 52 percent, of all traffic fatalities. Manhattan was also deemed the least safe borough for pedestrian injuries and fatalities in New York City. Nonetheless, the study found 2009 to be the safest year ever recorded in New York City’s history, with 256 total traffic casualties. That number represented a 63 percent drop in fatalities since 1990.
Taking into consideration the study’s findings, the Department of Transportation now aims to take several different measures to increase safety on and along the city’s roadways. The 2010-2011 Action Plan seeks to cut traffic fatalities in half by 2030. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan have pushed for a 3 percent decrease in fatality levels, beginning from levels recorded in 2007, each year. As a part of the action plan, the DOT is expected to set up countdown pedestrian signals at 1,500 NYC intersections. Sixty miles of streets, along with 20 intersections on highly trafficked Manhattan two-way streets, are expected to be re-engineered to increase pedestrian safety levels. According to Sadik-Khan, “This action plan suggests ways to move forward on both fronts, so that we can continue to drive down traffic fatalities and ensure New York truly has world class streets that are safe for everyone.”
