Tehran, Iran – An Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning may soon be executed according to her attorney. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the delayed execution of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who was convicted of adultery, may occur soon due to an end to a death sentence moratorium called for in observance of Ramadan. Ashtiani was also reportedly given 99 lashes after being mistakenly identified as a woman shown in a newspaper as having her head uncovered.
Javid Houtan Kian, an attorney for Ashtiani, is quoted by the AP as stating of the case, “The possibility of stoning still exists, any moment…Her stoning sentence was only delayed; it has not been lifted yet.”
Ashtiani, a mother of two, was convicted on the adultery charges in 2006.
