Dallas, Texas – Solo drivers in Dallas may be able to drive in designated car pool lanes at a cost. As reported by the Dallas Morning News, Dallas Area Rapid Transit executives are considering converting car pool lanes to toll lanes, initially allowing carpoolers and others who currently utilize the lanes to continue doing so at no charge. If the plans meet board approval, the managed lanes may be in operation by 2012.
Some remain skeptical that the plans will receive board approval due to criticisms already being expressed by some members. Board member Faye Moses-Wilkins is quoted in the report as stating, “I am feeling taxed out here. I’ve paid for these roads with my taxes, and I am going to be asked to pay again? I am just so against this… I look at the shape our HOV lanes are in now, with the broken pylons everywhere. As bad as it is now, we want to expand this program?”
Board member Richard Carrizales is further quoted as stating, “We’re rewarding people who are otherwise not concerned about the environment… I just don’t think we’re at a point where we could approve this.”
