New York – Longtime television correspondent and author Edwin Newman has died. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Newman passed away in England last month of pneumonia at age 91. The announcement of his Aug. 13 death was reportedly delayed by his family so they could grieve their loss privately before the news became public.
In addition to a long time spent working as a correspondent and journalist for NBC News, Newman authored several bestselling works during his career including “A Civil Tongue” and “Strictly Speaking: Will America be the Death of English?”
Former NBC anchor Tom Brokaw is quoted by the AP as stating of Newman, “Ed Newman was an early role model for my generation of NBC News correspondents — worldly, erudite and droll, qualities that were enriched by his pitch perfect use of the English language… He was always a gentleman and a reassuring presence in our midst.”
