Washington – An astonishing one in seven Americans are said to be living in poverty. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the Census Bureau released its annual report on the economic well-being of households in the U.S., showing the overall poverty rate had risen to 14.3 percent, or 43.6 million Americans.
President Barack Obama is quoted by the AP as having stated of the impact of the recession on working families in 2009, and the impact the passage of certain legislation has had in alleviating some of the strain, “Because of the Recovery Act and many other programs providing tax relief and income support to a majority of working families — and especially those most in need — millions of Americans were kept out of poverty last year.”
The 14.3 percent poverty rate in said to be the highest seen in the country since 1994, although lower than some demographers had reportedly predicted.
