Manila – A smoking ban has been implemented for doctors in the Philippines. As reported by AFP, the ban was put into place by the Philippine Medical Association to ensure that doctors set a positive example for patients and not put them at additional risk of second hand smoke exposure.
Association president Oscar Tinio is quoted in the report as saying in a statement on the matter, “Physicians must be role models on matters of health, whose lives, decorum and personality are highly respected or emulated by all sectors of society — that is why it is highly inappropriate for physicians to be seen smoking.”
As noted in the report, the organization is urging the public to report doctors who violate the order. There are a reported 17.3 million smokers in the country.
