New Jersey – U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg recently announced that he will introduce new legislation aimed at preventing the bullying and harassment of students following the recent suicide of a Rutgers University college freshman, whose intimate encounter with another man was filmed and released online. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Lautenberg spoke recently of the matter at a town meeting held on the campus of Rutgers.
As noted in the report, the suicide of Tyler Clementi, 18, and other suicides connected to anti-gay bullying, have prompted a nationwide discussion on the issue of bullying for young people.
Lautenberg is quoted by the AP as stating of Clementi, “No one could have heard about this degradation he suffered without feeling pain themselves… This is a major problem, and we’re going to fix it.”
