New York – Facebook is seeking to remove hateful content from the popular social networking site. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the site has teamed with gay advocacy group, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, to reduce bullying and hate speech by users.
As noted in the report, the efforts follow reports of several suicides of gay teens linked to anti-gay bullying. Hateful comments posted on a Facebook page created to honor the teens prompted GLAAD to request the site’s support in having online hate speech reduced.
Jarrett Barrios, the president of GLAAD, is quoted by the AP as stating, “Facebook has taken an important first step in making social media a place where anti-gay violence is not allowed.”
