(Air Filtration Systems News) – It was a painful irony: a government research center responsible for energy programs nationally was facing its own escalating energy costs. Indeed, the facility, part of the U.S. Department of Energy, wasn’t just having problems with costs, but with air quality on its campus. For answers on both fronts, the facility turned to Camfil Farr, a leading provider of energy efficient clean air solutions and air filtration systems.
Using sophisticated testing and analysis technology, Camfil Farr was able to compare, under ‘real-life’ conditions, the facility’s existing air filters with alternative products; namely, a Camfil Farr Hi-Flo bag, an innovative air filter constructed with Camfil Farr’s proprietary fine fiber media, which allows air filters to maintain their efficiency throughout their entire time in use (in comparison to traditionally designed air filters which degrade over time).
The Camfil Farr air filters had already proven their efficiency, and value, in buildings nationwide, particularly in hospitals and other healthcare facilities, where the need to keep air free of harmful particles that can spread infection, while at the same time containing costs, makes it critical to use the most efficient, sustainable air filters available. Hospitals that have switched to Camfil Farr air filtration solutions are seeing their HVAC energy costs drop by 15 to 30 percent. They’re also saving on disposal, maintenance, and replacement costs, as the Camfil Farr hospital air filters are switched out less frequently than competing products.
For the Department of Energy facility, two air handling units of equal airflow and close proximity were selected to test the product currently in use — a Flanders Precisionaire 85% efficiency final bag air filter (12-pocket) with a charged synthetic media — against a Camfil Farr Hi-Flo 85% bag air filter (9- pocket) with fine fiber media. The test was done in accordance with Eurovent Standards for in-place air filter testing and the competitor was invited to witness the test.
What the testing uncovered was that the Flanders Precisionaire filter had an initial pressure drop similar to the Camfil Farr fine fiber Hi-Flo® media product — but its efficiency was 36 percent lower than the Camfil Farr air filtration system.
After eight weeks, a second test was conducted. The Flanders filter measured at 26 percent efficiency — compared to 64 percent efficiency for the Camfil Farr air filter. Meanwhile, the Camfil Farr air filter was still operating at a pressure drop 10 percent lower than the Flanders filter.
In another round of testing, pitting Camfil Farr air filtration systems against a Flanders fine fiber fiberglass bag filter after eight weeks of use, the Flanders filter was found to already need replacement, while the Camfil Farr air filter was still going strong, with just a 0.61” pressure drop — compared to the Flanders filter’s drop of 1.” Just as importantly, the Camfil Farr filter was operating at a 10 percent higher efficiency level than the Flanders product.
Based on these tests, the government lab decided to switch to Camfil Farr clean air filtration systems, knowing that the air filters will maintain peak air quality while providing energy savings. So as it helps create the nation’s energy future, the facility’s own future will be looking bright, too.
The world leader in air filtration systems and clean air solutions — for health care and other industries — Camfil Farr air filtration systems provide the tools to achieve sustainability, maintain high air quality, and reduce airborne infections; all while lowering total cost of ownership.
