Portland, ME (WiredPRNews.com) The White House has designated the month of March as National Professional Social Work Month. The theme for 2011 is “Social Workers Inspire Community Action.” As part of this celebration, the University of New England’s School of Social Work is pleased to recognize the professional social workers from all practice areas who work to enhance the quality of life for the people they serve.
“Social work is a robust and growing profession,” says Dr. Martha Wilson, Director of the School of Social Work at the University of New England. “Our programmatic focus has always been on the active nature of the social work profession. We encourage our students to take leadership roles in both the empowerment of the people they serve and the transformation of the communities in which they work.”
The University of New England’s School of Social Work has a broad reach in the field of social work education. In more than 20 years of operation, the School of Social Work has awarded more than 1,000 Master of Social Work degrees, and its online Master of Social Work program currently enrolls about 200 practicing social workers from around the United States, Canada and abroad.
“Throughout our academic programs, we give our students the tools they need to challenge injustices in their own communities, and to empower their clients to recognize and reject abuse, exploitation and violence in their daily lives,” says Wilson. “Moreover, we train our students to promote social justice, equality, and diversity and to be sensitive to the dignity of each person in their care.”
“The need for professional social workers is immense. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the need for social workers will grow faster than average until at least 2018,” says Wilson. The University of New England invites practicing social workers in entry-level positions who would like to earn a Master of Social Work degree, and professionals in other fields who are interested in pursuing a career in social work to visit the school’s Web site at http://socialwork.une.edu for more information on educational and career options in the field of Social Work.
