Savannah, GA (WiredPRNews.com) The lodge pole pine tree is one species of tree that grows in cold climates. They are frequently found in the northern part of America and are considered to be very sensitive to climate change. The tree’s population is currently going down and this is because of the rapid climate change that is happening in the region. Scientists believe that if we don’t do anything to save them, most that are found in the Pacific Northwest region will disappear by 2080.
According to Premiere Tree Services of Seattle, “The lodge pole pine tree’s existence will be confined to the western part of north America, where it will only cover 17% of that place. A study on climate changes counted this tree to be most vulnerable.” The study was actually based on an analysis of 12,600 sites in the country. This tree is noted to occupy large areas especially after major forest fires. They are the first to sprout on the ground. Other trees find it hard to compete with the lodge pole pine especially if it is in cold climates. They can survive in poor soils and in heavy snowfalls that can break branches. So the other trees who can’t tolerate these type of environment, bow down to the lodge pole pine tree. They are frequently found in high elevated states like Oregon, Washington, The rocky mountain region and western Canada. Yellowstone National park hosts a large number of these trees.
Less winter precipitation, warming weather and the frequency of summer droughts are testing the will of the lodge pole pine tree to survive. Warmer temperatures allow bark beetles to do some damage on the tree species. The number of this tree is expected to decrease and it will start in the Pacific Northwestern area. The hotter it becomes the more of this specie of tree will disappear. The states that will initially feel its disappearance will be Oregon, Washington and Idaho once weather change issues start creeping in.
This type of tree was used by Native American Indians in the construction of their teepees in the old west. They are currently used commercially to make poles and fences. The wood is also used in the construction of habitation for big game animals.
