Vernon Hills, IL (WiredPRNews.com) To hear well-respected professionals in the field say that could be troubling to parents and caregivers relying on pacifiers as one way to soothe fussy babies. However, a recent research study tested a pacifier that does not cause problems, relieving the worry that they are compromising their child’s dental health by using a pacifier.
The study, published in the Pediatric Dentistry Journal, followed the long-term changes in the dentition of 121 infants. When the children studied were approximately sixteen months old, the researchers found that infants using Playtex Ortho-Pro pacifiers showed significantly less cases of open bites compared to the Nuk pacifiers, said Orbon, a Vernon Hills kids’ dentistry practitioner. Also, there was no statistically significant difference between the children using Playtex Ortho-Pro pacifiers and children who did not use a pacifier or engage in other non-nutritive sucking.
“It is not the length of time per day the child uses the pacifier. It’s the type of pacifier and how hard they are sucking on it,” said Maddox, the Vernon Hills pediatric dentist.
Vernon Hills kid dentistry practitioner, Dr. Wagner urges parents or caregivers who are worried about how pacifier, thumb or finger sucking is affecting a child’s dental development to immediately schedule an appointment with their children’s dentist. Vernon Hills pediatric specialist Wagner was concerned about how pacifier use would affect his new baby, so after reading the article in January/February 2011 issue, he decided to use the Playtex Ortho-Pro pacifiers for his daughter to use.
